Profiles

Abra

Abra is an absolutely stunning mare that resides at WIN Utah. She has a very strong presence in the herd and on the ranch.
It’s hard to find the right words to describe her beauty inside and out so we will let the photos speak for us!

Carmelito

Carmelito is a handsome young boy who loves to run! He has a high position in the herd and is always in the center of activity.
He is smart as a whip and a force to be reckoned with! Photos do not do him justice – gorgeous! He is doing very well with his studies
of the human race while working with WIN trainer George Ortiz. He is quickly learning that he can trust and have fun with people, and still be the
vibrant, brilliant horse that he is. No broken spirit here!

Cowboy

Cowboy is a friend to all! The Only exception is when a “friend “gets a little too close to his food, Cowboy can be seen shaking his horns in disapproval!
He is a Jersey Longhorn Steer that was rescued along with his mother, Nancy from slaughter. He is a welcomed permanent fixture and a member of the WIN family.

Estrella

As you can see in Estrella’s before photo she was in bad shape. Her ribs and vertebrae were fully visible. And on top of that she was with foal.
It came time for her to deliver her baby shortly after arriving to Win Ojai. Unfortunately the foal was stillborn and was only partially delivered, Estrella still weak from starvation, stressed, in a state of panic needed emergency veterinary care in order to remove the dead foal. There is a happy ending to this story; Estrella today is healthy and living free at WIN Utah. She went through starvation, trauma, and loss but in the end survived to become once again the healthy, beautiful horse she was meant to be, a star shining in the Utah sun.

Pearl

Pearl was scheduled for euthanasia by the county because of the enormous basketball sized tumor on her leg. This was not an acceptable option to WIN without giving her a chance at life. So WIN recruited Dr. Charles Liskey, a very skilled large animal vet and surgeon, to attempt this very risky tumor removal. The first step in this process was to build trust with Pearl so we could lead her and pick up her foot in order to get her to surgery. Keep in mind this is a wild horse we are talking about!! We had 10 days to accomplish this because the tumor was growing at an extremely rapid rate, and there was a possibly it could be attached to arteries and veins. With forbearance the first step was a success! And so was the surgery, which turned out to be even more complex and risky than originally thought. But thanks to the veterinary skills and knowledge of Dr. Lisky, his assistants and WIN supporters the outcome was a triumph. We can happily report that Pearl is healthy and sound today and living at WIN Ojai.

Sam

Sam is not only amazing to look at, but he has a personality of a King. He is the leader of the herd and certainly stands out in the crowd!!
He and Carmelito are good buddies.
